Identity Check

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,

so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

- Ephesians 2:10

There’s this voice in my head that tries to tell me who I am.

It says I’m a perfectionist. It says I don’t measure up.

The voice tells me that if I don’t complete all the tasks or check off all the boxes or show up on time looking put together and completely prepared that I am a failure.

That voice is harsh.

It hurts.

It says that my identity is all wrapped up in how well I show up for everyone else, how good I do, or how faithful I am.

The world’s opinions seem to influence this voice. My own harsh opinions of myself and others seem to influence this voice.

But over time, I’ve noticed that this voice is never true. I know this because it’s not what God says about me.

He says that in Jesus, I am made new. He says that I don’t have to strive; that my “measuring up” is defined by Jesus measuring up for me. He tells me that in Jesus I get a whole new identity! And He begins to whisper louder than the voice in my head: “You are loved. You are seen. You are made new. You are whole. You are mine!”

So often in Christian culture, people use the phrase “identity in Christ” to minister to others. If we would just put our identity in Christ, everything would be better…

But how? How do we silence the voice in our heads and allow God’s truth to be louder and louder?

It doesn’t happen by trying really really hard and it doesn’t happen by just hoping it will. Ephesians 1:11 (MSG) tells us that “It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.” God defines our identity, and it is in and through a relationship with Jesus that we get to know the character of our loving Father and how His character shapes ours. But without knowledge of who God is, we have an inaccurate view of who we are. This is where the voice comes from, this is what fuels the lies.

We need an identity check! We need to remind ourselves of who God is and what it means to be His daughter. We say all the time at Lane of Roses that when we have an accurate view of who God is, we have an accurate view of who we are, and it then affects every part of our lives!

And when we see God as holy, perfect, all knowing, loving, all powerful, creator, true, kind, and caring, we begin to see all we are in light of those truths.

That we are Redeemed (Ephesians 1:7), His (Jeremiah 32:38), Beloved (1 John 3:1), Loved (Romans 5:8), Known (John 10:14), Seen (Genesis 16:13), Cared for (1 Peter 5:7), Heard (1 John 5:15), Planned for (Jeremiah 29:11), Safe (Psalm 46:1), Set apart (1 Peter 2:9-10), and Free (Galatians 5:1).

God’s voice is never harsh towards His children, never unkind or condemning. His Word tells us that “we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” When we truly understand our identity in Christ in this way - that because of who He is, our identity is brand new - it compels us to serve Him by telling others all about this Jesus that silences the voices of the world and replaces them with beautiful, loving truth!

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” - 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

1. Who is God to you this week?

2. What lies about your identity are you believing?

3. Who does God say you are? What are the identities that He gives you?

4. In light of these truths, what are you going to do about it this week? Who are you going to tell?

Father, thank You that Your truth is louder than the lies. Thank You that Your Word tells me exactly who I am in You - that I am loved, seen, known, cared for, beautiful, delighted in. Thank You that I can know these things because of a relationship with Jesus! Thank You that You are the only one that defines who I am, Lord! Help me to boldly live out the identity that You give me today! I love You, Amen.
