Let the morning bring word of Your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in You.
- Psalm 143:8
I remember the first time I shared my testimony (God story) with a group of girls in my college bible study. It was the first time that I felt comfortable enough to talk about things that had happened in my past. At first it was a bit awkward and emotional, but as the evening went on, as I listened to the lovely ladies around me share their hearts, the mood in the room completely shifted.
When we are brave enough to share our story, and let others in, it helps to connect us through our experiences. We can begin to see that we aren’t alone in our struggles. You never know what the person next to you might currently be walking through. By telling your story, you just might be able to open a door for them in understanding that God truly does have a plan for their life. And that sometimes, it’s the really tough stuff that brings us that much closer to God and can truly strengthen our faith.
While I think it’s important that we are able to share and reflect on our story to help others, It is also important to keep in mind that we aren’t allowing ourselves to fall back into old patterns. Sometimes when you’ve finally reached a huge breakthrough in your story, the old you may be wanting to come back out. It’s tempting, but if we can appreciate our past for what it was and what we learned, we can continue to live out the individual plans that God has for our lives.
Even if you feel like your story may not be as difficult as someone else’s, your story still matters. Each of us has a unique message to share that can change something in and for someone else.
Sharing our testimonies and stories with others in our community can also help us to feel a bit of peace and healing. I remember feeling so much lighter after sharing all the things I’d struggled with in my youth and early adult years. It was truly like a weight had been lifted. Because of that, I’d like to encourage you to share your story with someone this week if you feel comfortable. It’s through our story, and relationship with Christ, that we can truly share His light with the world.
1. Have you shared your testimony before? What was that experience like?
2. What is one way that someone sharing their story has impacted your own life?
Dear Lord, I pray that You will help us to remember all that you have done for us. When our strength feels weak, You always meet us right where we are. Let us have the courage to share our testimonies as we feel led. I thank You for the uniquely wonderful stories that you have written in our lives. In Jesus name, amen.
