But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
- Matthew 6:33
During this season of life, I have found myself going through many changes. A new job and other exciting challenges have completely booked up my schedule. And if I’m being honest, I have found myself falling short in my relationship with God. I have chosen work over reading my Bible. I have chosen to spend time with my friends over spending time with Him. I have not had my priorities in order, and I have been using busyness as an excuse. I have not taken the time to properly rest and be filled up.
Rest is something that I have always struggled with. I have the need to keep as busy as possible, and even when I am trying to rest I am thinking about all of the things I have to get done. But I have been learning that amidst the busyness, the time we take to rest can be where we see the most growth. I love Matthew 11:28, which says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
This is a great reminder to me that it is okay to take a break and receive from God. I think sometimes today’s culture tells us that if we are not busy 24/7 we are failing. But that couldn’t be further from the truth; God wants us to spend time with Him. If we are constantly pouring out to others and not going to God for a refilling of His Spirit, we will be stagnant in our growth.
This week I would encourage you to take a look at your life, and see where your priorities are. If they are not with God, see what you can give up or change to invest in that relationship. Maybe that looks like waking up an extra 15 minutes early to read your Bible. Or it could look like staying in for a night and spending time in prayer. Whatever it is, God will be there to comfort you and refill you; we can always count on Him.
1. What is your perspective towards rest? Are you turning to God in the midst of your busyness?
2. What are some things in your schedule that you could give up in order to grow your relationship with God?
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for this day. Thank You so much for all of the peace You give me, day after day. God I ask that You give me a renewal of Your Spirit. When I am feeling stressed and overwhelmed with life, remind me to take time to rest in You. When I am feeling guilty about taking a step back, remind me that it is okay, and that you are here to fill me up. Thank You for Your everlasting love. Amen.
