“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe
in me through their message.”
- John 17:20
Did you know that Jesus prays for you? Sounds pretty crazy, doesn’t it? The same Jesus who came to Earth to die for you also made a point to pray for you.
It always makes me feel so special when I hear that someone has been praying for me. It feels even more so knowing that my Savior has always been praying for me.
As believers, we should understand how important and powerful it is to pray. We take all of our praises, sins, requests, worries, and burdens to God the Father. We’re familiar with the significance of praying for the people in our lives for countless reasons. Whether it be for healing or for comfort, for peace or for salvation, we carry these people to God’s feet.
Jesus carried us to the feet of God the Father in prayer.
John 17:20-26 details a specific prayer that Jesus made regarding the disciples and future believers. He said, “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message” (John 17:20). He prayed for all who will ever believe in Him.
Jesus was praying for us. Before we were even born, we were in Jesus’s prayers.
He prayed that believers would provide an example to the rest of the world and lead others to His everlasting love. Jesus prayed that we would be unified with each other and with God in such a way that the world would understand that God loves us as much as He loves Jesus.
“Father, I want those whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!” (John 17:24). Jesus prays that we will be with Him so that we can see just how much God loves Him—and so that we understand just how great God’s love is for us.
The theme through this whole prayer is love. Jesus understood how important it is for God’s children—and the rest of the world—to understand just how completely and utterly loved they are.
Love can change the world. Prayer can change the world.
If Jesus felt the need to pray for us and to pray for God’s love to be evident in the world, how much more important is it that we, who are reaping the fruits of our Savior’s prayers, pray for others and show them love? Where would we be today if Jesus hadn’t prayed for us over two thousand years ago? This so beautifully displays how dependent on God’s love and grace we always have been and always will be. Jesus is the reason our prayers mean anything at all.
Jesus Christ should be our ultimate example in everything that we do. He knew what we needed before we did and prayed for us. Let us extend that same love and grace to everyone around us, because Jesus is already praying for them, too.
1. Is there anyone specific that God has laid on your heart to pray for lately?
2. Is there anything special you can do to show them God’s love?
Lord Jesus, thank You for praying for me. I couldn’t be where I am without You and Your love. Thank You for the people who make time in their day to pray for me. Help me to remember to pray for the people in my own life, that they may see Your love shining through me. Don’t ever let me forget the power of love and prayer. Amen.
