A Seed in the Soil

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will

grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.

- Ephesians 3:17

When I was three, I asked Jesus into my heart. My older sister, in her excitement to get baptized, walked me through the steps to be saved. She explained that to be saved, you have to ask Jesus into your heart, and when you do that, Jesus is like a seed in the soil. I can remember at that age not really understanding what it all meant or how to apply it to my life. What I do remember understanding is from that point on, I knew that Jesus was always with me. I took comfort in knowing that Jesus was in my heart. Just knowing that Jesus was with me was enough to help me through difficult situations with friends, with family, and with school.

When we let Jesus in, even the tiniest amount, He can work amazing things in and through us. Even with the smallest amount of faith, God can do the impossible. But the more that you know, the deeper your faith goes, the more God can do.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). By inviting Jesus into our hearts, it is how we receive the more of God. God loves each of his children, and He wants the best for us; that is why He sent His son to save us (John 3:16). It is through Jesus that we can be assured of our salvation. It is through Jesus that we can find refuge. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. Psalm 62:6. It is through Jesus that we can have hope. It is through Jesus that we have the strength to do all things and the ability to find satisfaction in Him regardless of our circumstances. (Philippians 3:14).

The more we let Jesus in and the more room we give Him in our hearts, the more He will do, and the more God can use us for His kingdom and His glory. Like a seed or any other relationship, the more you tend to it, the stronger it will grow. I love that the imagery of Ephesians 3:17 shows how, through Jesus, we can be rooted in God. All we have to do is give Jesus room in our hearts.

I picture a tree with a vast root system and the ability to weather any storm. That is what our relationship with God looks like. What starts as a little seed grows, and through it, we are strengthened. God is love, and when we are rooted in Him, we can face every day with our confidence. The closer you grow to God, the more joy you find in walking with Him each day.

Reflection

1. How can I make more room in my heart for Jesus?

2. What is something I can do every day to be more rooted in God’s love?

Prayer

Dear Jesus, come and make my heart Your home. Lord, let me be rooted and established in Your love. Thank You, Jesus, that You are our Lord and Savior. Jesus, I trust You, and I know that You love me more than I could ever know. Lord, help me to grow each day in my love for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
