The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
- Lamentations 3:22-23
Being a single Christian woman in today’s society is not easy. The Bible calls us to trust God’s timing, yet our society is surrounding us with media telling us how important it is to have a significant other, get married, and have children. As Christian women, we are called to know our value and uphold ourselves to pure standards, but our world is full of dating apps, one night stands, and impurities.
It can be so disheartening to feel like you are constantly waiting for “the one” to come knocking at your door. I felt that way for a long time, thinking that I needed a boyfriend to be happy, that if I had one, I would finally feel whole. Eventually, I was in my first serious relationship and, spoiler alert, after almost two years of thinking “I made it,” I was even more unhappy!
Clearly, this was not the path the Lord intended for me to take. I soon discovered that I was searching for happiness and validation in all of the wrong places. The world is full of disappointment, and we are all mortal. But real happiness is found in our Heavenly Father.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end. - Lamentations 3:22 ESV
After searching for love in all the wrong places, I called myself to focus on the most important relationship in my life, my relationship with the Lord. As a result, not only do I feel more spiritually fulfilled than ever before, but my relationship with myself is improving as well. I am able to recognize my value, strengths, and importance without relying on another human being to validate them.
Being single isn’t always easy, though. The Lord has revealed to me that I need to wait on His timing and His plan. He has also taught me that learning to wait is NOT a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength:
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint. - Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
Just because God is telling you “not now” does not mean He is saying “not ever.” Perhaps He is hoping to draw you closer to Him so you can understand the plans He has for you. Perhaps He is working to teach you how valuable you are and reminding you of your value in Christ.
Your value is not determined by how old you are when you get married.
Your value is not determined by the number of people you date.
You have no less value because you are single.
You have no more value because you are in a relationship.
Your value does not fluctuate. God has claimed you as His own, and your true value is found in Him.
1. How can you change your perception of singleness from a negative limitation to a positive opportunity?
2. What simple actions can you take to recognize and validate your own value that was given to you through Christ Jesus?
Prayer Lord, Thank You for loving me unconditionally. Help me to continue to trust in Your plan and Your timing. Allow me to use this season to grow closer to You and to love myself more. Thank You for Your constant faithfulness in my life. Amen.
