We put our hope in the LORD. He is our help and shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, LORD, for our hope is in you alone.
- Psalm 33:20-22
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most hopeful story in the history of mankind. God sacrificed His only Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for the sins of the world. Every sin that we have ever committed was pardoned that day when Jesus took on the weight of our sins and died in our place. Jesus breathed His last breath and said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). He was then wrapped in cloth and laid in a tomb where a stone was placed in front of the entrance to seal Him in. Jesus suffered and died a gruesome death though He was completely innocent.
Now, imagine if the story ended there. Jesus died, and that was all. How sad would that be? But, the greatest news of all time is that the story absolutely did not end there!
Before His death, Jesus told His disciples, and anyone who would listen, that in three days He would rise from the dead--defeating death and the grave (Mark 9:31). Many did not believe Him. Those that wanted to kill Him thought they would finally be rid of Jesus when they put Him to death. But, the disciples and other followers of Jesus knew that He would keep His word and rise again in three days. Though it was terrible to see Him suffer and die, they had hope.
Hope is sometimes hard to muster. Satan wants us to feel hopeless and tries to give us every excuse to stay hopeless. Sadly, we almost cushion ourselves in, preparing for the worst-case scenario when we ought to place our hope in Jesus and leave it there. Jesus gave us the ultimate reason to hope in Him. Jesus rose from the dead--just as He said He would. This is not the first time He kept His word, and certainly not the last either. God gives us so many reasons to be hopeful. He holds the future. That alone gives me such abundant hope. We don’t have to fear tomorrow or what man can do to us because we have placed our hope in something higher than this world has to offer.
Because He lives, we can have abundant hope.
"For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” - Jeremiah 29:11

1. Is your hope off track? Are you placing your hope in the things of Earth, or in God?
2. How will you live differently, knowing that you can place your hope in Jesus?
Jesus, thank You for not only dying for my sins but for also rising again. I am so glad that You did not stay dead and, through that, gave me abundant hope. Help me to find my hope in You and not the things of this world. You alone are my source of hope. Open my eyes to the hope that can be found only in You. Amen.
