Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18
It’s easy to tell someone to be grateful in any circumstance, especially hard ones. But it’s much harder to live it out.
Be grateful during a pandemic?
Be grateful during job loss?
Be grateful during the loss of a loved one?
Be grateful during a hard diagnosis?
How can you even imagine to thank God during such tribulations? But it’s what we are called to do.
We are called to count it all joy when we are tried because when our faith is tested we have a chance to grow (James 1:2-3). We have an opportunity to lean on Him during the hard times and grow closer to Him.
This is what God wants for you, and me! He wants to be our solid rock on the ground, the One consistent thing we can count on! (2 Samuel 22:32, Psalms 18:31) The place we seek out when times are tough, and when things are going well. Because we all know it’s easy to be grateful when life is good, but much harder when things are rough.
So how can we put this into practice and make it a daily habit to thank God?
A great place to start is the four step prayer, ACTS:
Now I’m sure you’re wondering what each stands for.
Adoration is simply praise to God! Praise for Who He is, and how much He means to
Confession is pretty straightforward. Humble yourself before Him and repent (or confess your wrongdoings).
Thanksgiving is when we can be grateful towards God and all He does for us!
Supplication is where we bring our requests to Him.
Such a simple way to remember to humble ourselves before our God. For we are to “give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever!” (Psalms 107:1)
Friend, if you are struggling today to be grateful towards God - that is okay. We are human, and He knows our hearts. But tell Him that. He likes to hear from you, even if you are upset with Him.
Because that is one of the greatest parts of our God. He can handle anything you throw at Him because we serve a big God.
1. How can you apply the ACTS prayer to your life today?
2. What are you grateful for today?
Heavenly Father, I come to You today so so grateful for You. You allowed Your Son to come and die for me. To atone for my sins I had yet to commit and yet You still love me, care for me, and guide me. So thank You for all that You do in my life. The big and little things. I’m so grateful for the life I live here on earth and the life I have yet to live with You in Heaven. Help me today to see You more in my everyday life. I want to be near You so I can see just how much more joy You place in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
