Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine.
- Exodus 19:5 ESV
Five years ago, God placed it on my heart to write a book. I questioned God. Where do I find the time? How am I qualified to write a book? Well, a few weeks later, I was laid off from my job. As a single parent I was devastated. God told me again, write the book. My response was God, I do not have time to write a book. I am an unemployed, single mother and I need to provide for us. God told me that He would provide for us. Instead of being obedient and writing the book, I prayed and begged God to give me a job. God granted me a job a few months later.
The Israelites were God’s chosen people. God led the Israelites out of Egypt. God was with the Israelites both day and night as He led them to safety. The Israelites were promised to live in the land Canaan, which flowed with milk and honey. All that was asked of the Israelites was to follow God’s commandments. Along the way to Canaan, the Israelites chose to be disobedient. They were defiant to both their leader and God. That generation that was so defiant and they did not get to see the land flowing milk and honey. They walked in the wilderness for about forty years, in which most of them died.
Every time I read the story about the Israelites; I cannot help but to think about myself. I cannot help but to think about my own personal disobedience. Here it is five years later, and I am finally being obedient with the task of writing a book. I can just imagine how different things would be if I would have just been obedient and moved forward with writing the book five years ago. I can just imagine, if I would have just used that time that I was unemployed to write the book. I can just imagine how things would have been different if I would have just trusted God to provide for me and my daughter.
I am so glad that God has given me opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to be obedient to Him. Even though I did not write the book five years ago, God did not take the task away from me. Sometimes we get so caught up in the circumstances that we can see that it causes us to not be obedient to God’s Word. Often, we get caught up in the life of comfort that we cannot and do not see the great promises that God has in store for us. The Israelites complained about eating manna every day. They did not see that God was providing for them as He led them to the land that He promised them.
God wants to shower us with blessing and promises. But we must do our part and be obedient to Him and His Word. We must also trust Him in the process.
1. Take a few moments to pray and reflect. Are there areas in your life where you’re being disobedient to God?
2. What are some steps you can take to live a life of obedience and trust?
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and grace. Forgive us for the times that we have been disobedient. We pray for a willing heart so that we can be more obedient to You. Please continue to lead and guide us in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
