But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself."
- Genesis 3:9-10 ESV
The lie was out there. Eve was deceived by Satan and believed that she could exist in the Creator’s place. She believed she could now be like God and obtain wisdom that did not depend on Him. In other words, Eve would be the center of the universe.
Adam just flat out disobeyed. 1 Timothy 2:13-14a says, “For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived.” He was directly warned by God not to eat fruit from one particular tree, but he chose to seek life beyond what God had offered. Both Adam and Eve believed they could discern between “good and evil” and they wanted God’s position!
For the longest time I thought the story of Adam and Eve was solely about sin entering into the world; however, their story is completely relevant to today, as well. God has given us freedom to make choices every day of our lives. We tell our kids to “make good choices” when they leave the house, but what we often fail to realize is that Satan is the Great Tempter! He wants us to step over and ignore God’s boundaries and to believe the lie that good things will come into our lives even if we don’t follow Him. Sadly, this is a deadly lie.
Romans 1:22 says, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” It is Satan’s desire to make us believe that we don’t need God. Adam and Eve were living in a perfect situation, yet they failed to follow God’s divine instructions. For us today, we must seek God’s Truth in all situations and run to Him. It is there that we will find spiritual peace, contentment, rest, satisfaction, and joy that can be found nowhere else in creation.
1. What is the “fruit” or poor choice in your life that keeps you from knowing, applying, and obeying God’s Word? 2. Do your everyday choices reflect God’s truth established in HIs Word?
3. When you find yourself caught up in a struggle, is God your first choice to run to for comfort and direction?
Lord God, we come to You today because we do not want to be fooled by Satan. His lies and deceptions pull us away, but we want to follow You. Please make us aware of any pride or misunderstandings in our lives so that we are not deceived. We thank You for Your Word that leads and directs us and for people in our lives who are willing to call us out on areas where we cannot see Your Truth. We pray these things in the name of Your precious Son, Amen!
