Even More than a New Years Resolution

Written by: Amanda Biro

The New Year looks different for everyone. Perhaps you’re like me and love the freshness it brings. It's a new beginning, and a chance to reevaluate your goals. But I know for many, it can also feel a bit overwhelming. Every January, I like to set resolutions. For many years, I struggled to keep up with the intentions I set for myself. However, this past year I’ve really focused on ways I can help myself stay on track and how I can invite God into the process. Here’s a list of things I have found helpful!

Write down your goals

I always find that writing things down helps make them more real. I can be very forgetful, so I like to leave myself little reminders throughout my house of my goals. These can be weekly goals, or your yearly resolutions. Either way, these little reminders can help you stay on track, and can keep them in the front of your mind through the busyness of life.

Ask friends to help keep you accountable

Doing things alone is hard. Having a support system to help you stay accountable can make a huge difference in sticking to your resolutions. As an example, a recent goal I have set for myself is to go for a walk once a week. I really struggle with taking time out of the day for self-care, so I asked a friend to remind and encourage me weekly. This has helped me immensely, and I have so far been able to stick to it!

Frequently pray for your resolutions

Keeping God at the centre of your goals is crucial. Once a week, I spend some time praying specifically for my goals and resolutions. I also spend time listening to God, seeing if He has any guidance or direction to give me. I like to write down these prayers, so I can look back and reflect to see how God was moving in my life.

Be open to God leading you in a different direction

This one is a struggle for me. I always like to think that I know best, especially around the direction I think my life should take. Especially this year, there has been so much uncertainty that many of my goals and resolutions have changed. I’ve been trying to remember that God is in control, and that what He has planned is greater than anything I could ever imagine. Looking back on this past year, one of my plans was to travel and see the world with my friends. Obviously, that didn’t happen. So many things about last year were difficult and challenging, but God used that time to force me to rest and slow down. Even when things don’t go to plan, He is still working!

I hope that this list is an encouragement to you, as you consider your resolutions for 2021. Seek God as you are considering your goals for the year, and keep Him at the centre of everything. I hope that this year is filled with peace, love, and joy, and that God moves mountains for you!
