I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.
- Psalm 32:8
Does God have a plan for the lives of His children? How can we tell if God is telling us to do—or not to do—something?
First, we must know God.
How can we know if God is telling us to do something if we do not know Him? We must talk to Him often, and leave our burdens and cares at His scarred feet. As we grow closer to Him, we will come to know more of His heart and of His character. Psalm 145:8 says, “The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy” (NKJV). God would not ask us to do something that goes against who He is.
Second, we must know His Word.
In the Bible, God shows us how to live in a way that is pleasing unto Him. What God wants us to do will always line up with His Word. God guides us through the truth of Scripture. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (NKJV). God’s Word illuminates the way we should walk.
Lastly, we must know who God made us to be.
The world tells us to lean on our understanding and to follow the whims of our heart. Scripture shows us how our flesh is weak and our heart is deceitful. Proverbs 28:26 says, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered” (NKJV). Do not follow your emotions. Ask more mature Christians for perspective and advice and prayer as you make decisions. Ask God for wisdom and discernment.
God wants us to follow and obey Him in everyday situations. In Romans 12, God tells us “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (NKJV).
We must live in a way that looks different from the world around us. We must follow after Him instead of following after our own desires. I love God because He redeemed me and saved me from sin. And because I love Him, I want to walk after Him. If we love God, we must obey Him.
1. In what areas am I struggling to fully obey God? How can I work on that?
2. Does what you think God is telling you line up with His character and the Bible?
God, help us as we seek Your will for our life. We desire to follow You and serve You, but many times we lose our way and stumble and fall. We cannot follow You on our own. Help us, Lord, that we might live a life that honors You.
