Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
- Philippians 4:6a
All I heard was laughing, chatter, and dishes being washed. As confusion filled my head, my lamp was illuminating my room, confusing me more. I realized that I had fallen asleep again. Frustration filled my body as I knew trying to sleep later tonight would never come! More talking and laughter overcame my frustration. “What is that noise? Also, what time is it?” I spoke to myself, still confused. As I was walking out of my room, it dawned on me what that noise was.
Yes, yet again, it was my family eating dinner together. As the sadness filled my eyes, I sluggishly walked back to my room knowing exactly why I fell asleep in the first place. My headspace and mental struggles started all over again when my anxiety, deep sorrow, loneliness, worry, and the need for attention in some way filled my mind within 10 seconds. My worth and identity were at a low.
In this moment in my life, my worth and identity were found in my family rather than God. And only God can fill the role I needed. Only He could give me the true healing and peace I was looking for!
I would always hear these verses from my friends and church leaders when I was in moments like above, but would never feel satisfied.
Do not be anxious about anything… - Philippians 4:6
So do not worry, because I am with you. Do not be afraid… - Isaiah 41:10
...he will never leave you nor forsake you. - Deuteronomy 31:6
All of the verses above are amazing verses, but at that time, my heart only desired an encouraging word for a MOMENT. Yet, God’s word is LIVING and ACTIVE, it does not return void!!! (Hebrews 4:12; Isaiah 55:11)
My point of view only revealed a part of God’s characteristics. He is much more than a moment of encouragement.
In reality, God cares for every part of our life. He provides us with what we need. He gives peace. He helps you overcome your mental struggles, not only parts of what you need.
Be full of joy in the Lord always. I will say it again, be full of joy. Let everyone see that you are gentle and kind. The Lord is coming soon. Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God's peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:4-7 NCV
I said, ‘You are my servants.’ I have chosen you and have not turned against you. So don't worry, because I am with you. Don't be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help, I will support you with my right hand that saves you - Isaiah 41:9-10 NCV
Be strong and brave. Don't be afraid of them and don't be frightened because the Lord your God will go with you. He will not leave or forget you. - Deuteronomy 31:6 NCV
God is more than we can imagine!
Our God is a loving God Who wants you to know what will happen if you pray when you are anxious. He wants us to know what happens when we do not fear the world and turn to Him. He wants to show us that He is the God of even more than our mental struggles.
1. Challenge: do some research on a verse to help receive the fullness of God, rather than only part of it.
2. God is even more than we can imagine. Take a moment of silence and ask Him to show you where He has shown up within your mental struggles.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being more than we can imagine through our struggles with mental illness. Thank You for being there when we feel lonely, worried, and/or stressed out! Thank You for showing us that You are even more than mental illness! I pray that when those times come around, we will be reminded You are EVEN MORE than our mental illness!
In Your loving name,
