His Incredible, Undeserved Gift

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might
become the righteousness of God.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21
Read the verse above one more time slowly and carefully. God made Him (Jesus) who had NO sin, not a single ounce of it, to be sin for us who sin daily and sometimes without thought.
Jesus took our sin when he was perfect and so undeserving of any suffering He faced for us.
Jesus was wrongly accused and suffered beyond anything we could ever imagine so that we could become the righteousness of God. I don’t know about you but I feel pretty undeserving of that. Our sweet Jesus gave His life in order for our sins to be forgiven and we can have eternal life. There are no words that I can say to describe just how truly incredible that gift is.
I don’t know about you but when I receive an amazing gift from someone or someone goes out of their way to do something for me I feel indebted to return the favor. If my best friend surprises me with coffee at work I feel like it is only fair to bring her one the following week. If my roommate deep cleans our apartment I feel like the next time things get a little messy I owe her.
I want to give back to someone what they give for me, but I could never repay Jesus for what He did for me.
I heard a song today that asked how we could respond to a love that Jesus lavished on us and then said “I don’t have much but I have a heart that beats for you and a life I’ll give to you.” This song painted a beautiful picture of how we can take up our cross daily and live for our Lord.
We are called to take up our cross and follow Jesus, which means we are dying to ourselves and living for Him. Just as the song said we have a heart that beats for Him and a life we will give. This means we are giving up our selfish desires and hearts set on worldly things, and living a life that brings glory to our Lord. We have been showered with sweet forgiveness and unending love so with that it is an honor to live for Jesus.
1. How can you “take up your cross” in your day-to-day? What does that look like?
2. When you think of Jesus dying an undeserving death what emotions do you feel? How can you respond?
Lord, we will never be able to repay You for the sacrifices You made for us. We thank You for the forgiveness and love so willingly given to us. I pray that we seek ways to take up our cross and live a life that brings glory and honor to You. Thank You for walking alongside us and never forsaking us. You are so good and we are so thankful for this life lived for You.
