Hope Through COVID-19

Written by: Hannah Springer

“As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.” - Psalm 71:14 NIV

COVID-19. A word that held no power, no fear, or no hopelessness two years ago. For the past year, our world has lived in a divided, helpless, and what seems to be a hopeless state due to the ongoing pandemic we are living within. The reality of COVID-19 didn’t fully sink in until I tested positive. Shortly after, my parents and I were all laid up in bed for days, feeling achy all over. Depending on where I looked: Twitter, FOX News, CNN, Facebook, or any other news platform, I would have been told there was no hope. While I understood the severity of this illness and the responsibility of taking it seriously and not spreading it, this fear should not touch my grounded and secure hope in Jesus Christ.

Knowing your foundation in Christ, your hope remains steady when everything else is falling apart. As we (hopefully) continue to move forward out of this pandemic, here are 5 ways our hope holds us steady during COVID-19:

  1. As Christians, we know we are seen, protected, and heard. “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.” 2 Thessalonians 3:3 NIV. We know we are held and seen beyond anything from the protection of the world. When viruses attack our body, we are protected by the divine God in charge of our lives. Even when that doesn't come with the healing we pray for, the result we wanted, or the answer we were searching for, we are fought for. These days have been hard, yet God has never once left our side.

  2. God will never leave our side, even when it seems like we cannot be around any other humans. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV. When we think we are alone due to quarantine, social distancing, etc., we can hold tight to our promise of never being alone.

  3. God is in full control of the world, the pandemic, political leaders, and all other fearful powers around us. “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” Psalm 33:8-9 NIV. He is in full control of COVID-19, we can trust the way He handles it.

  4. We are promised to receive what we pray for when we pray with a heart of Christ. “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24. We have a God that we can pray to and trust that He hears us, knows us, and will answer us according to His will.

  5. We have hope beyond this life. As Christians, we believe that we have life beyond this world. While death is a scary concept, we have peace and joy knowing that there is life beyond the physical realm. “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20. This promise keeps us from living in fear on Earth.

As we continue to step outside of this crazy season of COVID-19, we can stand firm in our hope we have in Christ. The beauty of this hope is that it is something we get to share with others around us. We are all entitled to this hope, because we are all made in the image of God. As this encourages your soul, it also leads us to encouraging others. Our hope leads to a life free of fear, allowing us to live a life of loving others, encouraging others, and leading in holiness and truth.
