If Bible Characters Slid Into DM's

Written by: Abby Gannon

Do you ever find yourself wondering about relationships from generations past? How did your great great grandparents meet each other? How did arranged marriages work during the Renaissance? Did people in the 1400s go on dates?

Let’s explore even further back, shall we? Have you ever thought about relationships in the Bible?

God’s Word gives us some pretty crazy examples to look to. Eve was literally formed from Adam. Abraham and Sarah were half-siblings. Jacob worked 14 years and ended up with 2 wives. Hosea was tasked with marrying a prostitute. Isaiah had an arranged marriage put together by his father’s servant.

What interesting beginnings to relationships!

Imagine with me for a moment. Get your creative juices flowing. You ready? Okay.

What if rather than traveling across the country to find a wife from your father’s tribe, instead of being commanded by God to seek out a less-than-ideal spouse, instead of trading servitude for marriage… what if the people in Bible times had cell phones and social media? What if they could reach out at the drop of a hat? What if they, like many people today, could slide into the DMs of their love interest?

Would they use a cheesy pick up line? Would they try and compliment their potential suitor only to turn them off? Would they end up embarrassing themselves? Would the relationship even work out? Follow along with us below as we imagine what it would be like if Bible characters slid into DMs:

Adam:

“Girl, you are literally the only one I have eyes for. And whoa - man, you are gorgeous! Get it… whoa-man… woman.”

Eve:

*Eyeroll emoji*

Abram:

“Hey, I think I’ve seen you around before.”

Sarai:

“...I’m literally your half sister.”

Abram:

“Yeah, but you cute though…”

Jacob:

“You’re looking so pretty I’d work 7 years for you.”

Rachel:

“Yeah, I bet you’d work 7 years for my sister too.”

Jacob:

“Well, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.”

Solomon:

“Girl, your eyes are like doves.”

Beloved:

“Doves?? What is that supposed to mean? Boy, I’m the prettiest rose in the field.”

While there are some pretty crazy examples of relationships in Scripture, how cool it is that God writes each and every story. Whether you’re single, dating, or married, know that if God is sovereign enough to write the life stories in the Bible, He has the perfect life story for you too! Trust Him with your life and heart, and He will provide exactly what you need.
