It is Finished

When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

- John 19:30 (NLT)

I paid off my car loan over 2 years ago and I can still remember the exhilaration I felt that day because I still feel it today anytime I drive my car. I carried the weight of that debt for 6 years and worked really hard to pay off that loan in full. Not long after, I received a letter from the bank and I happily read the words “DEBT PAID IN FULL” aloud as I did a happy dance in my living room. Paying off that debt helped me take one more step towards financial freedom; to victory.

It is finished” are the last words Jesus cried out on the cross before He died. In Greek it translates to Tetelestai which comes from the verb teleo which means "to end, i.e. Complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt)." As a child I couldn’t have fully comprehended the depth of what Jesus cried out, but “It is finished” are the three words in all of Scripture that I’ve never forgotten since hearing them as a child. The Holy Spirit has this beautiful way of helping us better understand Scripture the longer we let it marinate in our soul and move through life. And because of that Tetelestai has more meaning to me now more than ever.

Jesus surrendered His will for that of the Father’s and He did it for us. He carried the weight of my sin; of your sin. He didn’t cry out “I am finished,” He cried out “It is finished.” Jesus died to pay for my sins. He completed what He was sent to do and NOTHING can ever change the outcome of Jesus’ victory. He rendered satan powerless and reconciled us to God giving us the gift of eternal life in Christ. A truer love will never be found. I want to live in the light of that truth every single day, not just in this season of Easter.

It is finished! Tetelestai! The victorious battle cry of our Savior that echoes through yesterday, today, and forever. No greater words have ever been spoken. No greater sacrifice has ever been given. No greater victory has ever or will ever be won. Tetelestai! IT IS FINISHED!

1. What are some ways you can live out the truth of “It is finished” in your daily life?

2. In what ways have you been able to experience freedom in Christ because of Jesus’ victory?

3. How does knowing that your debt is paid in full change how you live today?

Oh selfless and generous Savior, thank You for carrying my debt and paying it in full. Thank You for Your kindness and generosity. Please help me to pause in my daily life to remember and acknowledge what You accomplished when You completed what You were sent to do. Please help me to live in light of this truth so that I may glorify Your name above all else. Amen.
