Jesus Our Healer

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is anyone of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.

- James 5:13-15 NIV

I still remember the morning I got the call. I was a junior in high school, and the phone kept ringing before it was time to get up. When I answered, at first quite grumpily, my mom had told me that my nanny was about to go in for a quadruple bypass and that she wanted to talk to me before going in. This is the day that changed everything.

At that time, as a teenager, I don’t think I realized just how serious the situation was. I had gone on to school and was going to get dropped off at the hospital after. I figured the doctors had it covered, and while I was worried, I still expected a good outcome.

When I got to the hospital, I learned that my nanny had had a stroke during her surgery and that they weren’t sure if she would ever fully recover. Still, being a naive teen, I thought of course she would. She’s Nanny, why wouldn’t she?

After an extended stay at the hospital she was transferred to a rehab facility where she had to relearn how to do pretty much everything. For a while she couldn’t walk, talk, or do even the most basic of functions. This was one of the hardest things to watch because she’d always been very strong-willed, stubborn, and independent. Honestly, all we could do was pray and trust that the Lord would take care of her. Our whole family and church community were praying for her.

Then one day, after what seemed like forever, she started to slowly gain her strength. Over the course of a few months, she was healed, and we were able to finally take her home. I always tell people that she’s a miracle. And she always just says, “Honey, I’m a tough ole bird.” While this wasn’t the last of her health issues, it is the first time I feel I truly witnessed the healing nature of Jesus. And it’s one of the reasons I believe He will still perform miraculous healings, even today.

Whenever I go back to this point in time, I'm reassured that no matter what is going on, He is with us. If we are hurt, sick, brokenhearted, He is who we should run to.

Jesus is right there waiting for us, all we have to do is ask. And even if the situation is scary or the outcome isn’t what we expected, He is always with us.

Reflection

1. What is one way you have experienced healing through Jesus?

2. Take a moment and pray for the healing of those you know that are going through a rough time.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray that You will help us to trust in You, even when we don’t know the outcome. Help us to give every situation or hurt to You. We know that You alone are our healer. Thank You for always being right there when we call. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
