May be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled
with all the fullness of God” (NKJV).
- Ephesians 3:18-19
About a month after my mom passed away from cancer, my dad gave my sisters and I special necklaces. On these necklaces were printed my mom’s fingerprint and the words I love you written in her familiar cursive handwriting.
Seeing those words I love you reminds me of how much my mom has always loved me, and always will. I carry her love with me; I cling to its memory.
For Mother’s Day, I gave my mom a small decorative stone cross with the words of Psalm 138:8, which says, “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your love, O Lord, endures forever.” Now, I keep that small cross in my bedroom as a reminder of God’s love.
God’s love touched me years before cancer took my mom away. Death cannot silence His love. His love outlives our doubt and our fears. His love is deeper than our anguish and wider than our despair. When we come to Him—broken and burdened—His love covers us.
Sometimes, when the darkness of this world closes in, we question His love. We feel lost in the noise around us, and we forget that He is ever with us, loving us, and waiting for us to love Him back.
When I was little, I remember reading Sam McBratney’s children’s book titled Guess How Much I Love You. In this book, a little rabbit and his dad go back and forth, showing how much they love each other. In the end, the little rabbit falls asleep, and his dad whispers to him, “I love you right up to the moon…and back.”
Just like the little rabbit in the story, we can’t truly comprehend how great God’s love for us is. He loves us to the cross and back. We know His love even though we cannot fully understand it.
Romans 5:8 tells us that “God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (NKJV).
Even before we come running back to Him, God’s love for us is great and deep and endless. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes about His love:
“I asked Jesus, ‘How much do you love me?’
‘This much,’ He answered. Then He stretched out His arms and died.”
Reflection
1. What are some of the ways that God has shown His love toward you?
2. How does Scripture show us the depth and width of God’s love?
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving us. Your love for us is greater than we can understand. I pray that we will come running back to Your arms. No matter what happens this year, help us to trust Your goodness, and rest in Your love, which endures forever. Amen.
