“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you...No, I will not abandon you as orphans - I will come to you.”
- John 14:16, 18
At this point, Jesus is near death and He is having one final conversation with His disciples. He has been teaching them for quite a while - the traditionally accepted amount of time He spent with His disciples on earth is three years. And during that time, I can imagine that the disciples would have grown very close to Jesus, and He to them. During this conversation, they must have been very sad and their hearts heavy knowing that their Teacher would be leaving them soon. But Jesus promised to send a Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to His disciples so that they would not be alone. Even in His final moments before being arrested, Jesus thought about His disciples and how they would miss Him. He assured them that He would not leave them comfortless.
Jesus is not only our God, our Creator, and our Savior - He is our Friend. He loves us so much that when His physical body left earth, He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in those who believed in Him.
Jesus does not forsake us, especially when we are sad or stressed or overwhelmed or hurt. Hebrews 13:5b is a wonderful promise to cling to: “For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’” In our darkest moment and in our happiest moment, God is with us. He is always with us. He is not a fair-weather friend who will forsake you as soon as the storm clouds gather in your life. No, He is right there beside you every step of the way. Psalm 23:4 confirms this: "Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me."
Whatever you are going through today, friend, let me remind you that Jesus is right there with you. He has not forgotten or forsaken you. He will walk beside you, whether you have joy or sadness, sunshine or rain in your life. He is the truest, best Friend you could ever have. I know He is.
When I was a little girl, I struggled with loneliness. After some friendship problems in elementary school, I had a hard time reaching out to people and making friends. During that time I would pray to Jesus at night, talking to Him as if He were right there with me. I would talk to Him as if He were my Friend, and He is. He listened to a lonely little girl who cried out to Him and poured out her heart to Him, often as she cried. If Jesus can comfort a little girl and be a Friend to her, He can be a Friend to you too, no matter what you are going through right now.
1. What was a promise Jesus made to His disciples in their discomfort?
2. How is Jesus my Friend today?
Dear Jesus, thank You for being my Friend, no matter what my circumstances in life are. You are the truest Friend I could ever have, and I pray that I would invite You into my life as I would an earthly friend. Thank You for promising to never leave me nor forsake me, and thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit so we would not be comfortless. I love You, Lord, and in Your Name I pray, amen.
