But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.
- John 4:14
We all have pasts and have done things we aren’t proud of. We are all sinners.
But, God still has a plan for us.
Sometimes I struggle with thoughts about how I could never be good enough or strong enough to do what God has asked me to do.
Why would He ask a sinner like me? Doesn’t He know what I’ve done and how terribly I could mess things up?
But He still has a plan for me and asks for me to participate in that plan.
In John 4, Jesus stops at a well while His disciples get food. While He is there, a Samaritan woman comes to draw water from the well. Because of some deep-seated disagreements over where people are supposed to worship, the Jews and the Samaritans refused to associate with each other. On top of that, this woman—as Jesus later reveals—has had five husbands, and the man she’s in a relationship with now isn’t her husband. This lifestyle was looked down on in that society.
The last thing anyone would have expected was for Jesus to speak to her.
But Jesus asks her for something. He asks her for water.
“She said to Jesus, ‘You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?’” (John 4:9). She was shocked. In spite of who she was and what she had done, Jesus still asked her to do something for Him.
I feel that way sometimes. God asks me to trust Him and do something, help someone, or even give something, but I can’t help but ask, “Why me? You know who I am. Isn’t there someone more qualified?”
When the Samaritan woman questions Him, Jesus turns things around and offers her something only He can: Living Water.
God asks us to do things so that He can best show us how much we need Him.
Whenever we are faced by some seemingly impossible challenge that God has asked us to overcome, and we ask, “Why?” God says, “Let me show you what I can do.”
Whatever your stage of life, or the state of your heart, God wants you. He has a plan made specially for you. His forgiveness and love are unconditional. His offer of Living Water doesn’t expire. There is nothing that God cannot use for His glory.
God can use anyone for His plan. No matter your past, He holds your future. No matter what you have done, He knows what you can do—in Him.
1. What is a challenge that God has asked you to overcome?
2. What could God be trying to show you through this challenge?
Heavenly Father, thank You that, for reasons I could never understand, You want me, in spite of everything I have done. Thank You for the plans You have that maybe I can’t see the end of. Thank You for equipping me for what You have set before me. Open my eyes to see You working so that I may be used for Your glory in everything that I do, Amen.
