For to us a child is born, to us a son is given...and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
- Isaiah 9:6
Hope. Hope is a word that I, unexpectedly, have needed in my life more than one time, actually more than 100 times. This word has a great meaning to it when I think about Jesus.
The verse, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given...and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) is a verse that demonstrates the hope that we have with Jesus. He is a wonderful counselor, a mighty God, and everlasting Father, and so much more. Yet, Jesus did not come to earth as just God, He came down fully man and fully God. He came to earth as a child!
When I think about Jesus coming as a child, I think of a similar question that a crowd was thinking about after hearing Jesus speak, “...isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven?'’” ( John 6:42 NLT)
The crowd was wondering what I have also thought. I know who Jesus’ earthly parents are. They are Mary and Joseph, yet His father is also God. To me, it is crazy to think that God’s plan was to send Jesus as a baby to come save us. A little baby came to die for our sins, to change the world.
The song “Seasons” by Hillsong Worship puts it perfectly. “You could have saved us in a second / Instead you sent a child.” God brought hope by sending His Son as a baby. A baby that fulfilled all the prophecies. A baby that is a Wonderful Counselor. A baby that saved the world from our sin.
Jesus is our hope. Our unexpected hope.
1. Jesus is our hope and He came to Earth as a baby. What in your life can God make big from something small?
2. After reading this devotion, I challenge you to read deeper. Look up these verses to see what else His Word says.
Isaiah 7:14; 50:7
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, down as a baby. A little baby that is the Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace. Sometimes in life, the unexpected comes from You and it can be so amazing. I pray that we will remember the amazing things Jesus did and will continue to do throughout our lives. In Your name, Amen.
