Prayer - Where Do I Even Start?
Written by: Jessica Fox
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances,
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
I remember when I first became a believer, I found the aspect of prayer simply terrifying. What was I supposed to say? Was there a set of prayer etiquette guidelines out there for me to make use of? I originally thought that for God to actually hear me when I’d pray, I had to be some eloquent speech giver or something. But that is definitely not the case, and I am so thankful for that.
If you are new to prayer, below are a few tips to help you get started!
1. Thank God
One of the easiest ways to start a daily prayer is to give thanks for the good things that you do have in your life. Even if you are going through a more difficult season, you could even thank Him for just being there to listen when you call out to Him.
2. Think of God as you would a best friend
As I mentioned earlier, I used to think I had to say just the right thing when I would pray. The thing that has helped me the most since then is to just come to Him like I would one of my friends. Remember that nothing is too big or small for Him to handle, and he’s always right there with you!
3. Try Prayer Journaling
Maybe you think that prayer can seem a bit slow or boring. Since there is no exact way to pray, one of my favorite forms is prayer journaling. To do this, I usually will read a devotion in the morning and pray according to the Scriptures it mentions, finding a way to apply them to whatever may be going on. Feel free to brighten things up with colorful markers or stickers for added fun!
