They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
- Psalm 1:3 NLT
Depending on where you live in the world, you’re either in the middle, end, or recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. Regardless of which phase you’re in right now, I’m sure we can all agree that it’s been uncomfortable and scary, frustrating and exhausting, lonely, and painful. Our emotions have gone from one extreme to another and have been difficult to process. It’s been a foreign experience for us all and left us feeling as if our new reality couldn’t actually be happening.
But here we are. Smack dab in the middle of Spring and doing our best to recover from this tragic pandemic. And while we’re looking forward to putting this all behind us and moving forward, let’s pause and sit with it a little longer. I know! That’s the last thing any of us want to hear or do right now. But, let’s not rush the timeline or waste the pruning that has taken place here. God has perfect timing and He is sovereign.
The verse above is much like another one of my favorites found in Jeremiah 17:8 (NLT) which reads:
“They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” - Jeremiah 17:8 NLT
It doesn't matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, if we’re rooted deep in Christ, He will sustain us through it all, we will bear much fruit, and that fruit will bring Him glory.
A few months ago, I saw a post on Dave Ramsey’s Instagram that immediately made me realize my perspective had been stuck in skewed mode for too long. He wrote: “Just a few weeks ago The Wolgan Valley floor was black from Australian fires. Look at her now. God is about restoration, renewal, and redemption.” With that was a picture of a lush and revived valley.
Did you read that? GOD IS ABOUT RESTORATION, RENEWAL, AND REDEMPTION!!
Sweet girl! Don’t lose faith! Be encouraged! SPRING has come!
Y’all. I’m that grown woman dancing in that Spring rain with that childlike faith singing “April showers bring May flowers.” And, you better believe that I’m soaking up every drop of blessings and flourishing in the Father with my heart postured to God!
This pandemic has been tragic for everyone around the world. But one day, I hope that we can all see that it’s also been a gift to us as well. God allowed and entrusted each of us to live through this experience for a purpose and I won’t spend a second wasting that gift.
All things must die before being reborn. And what we feed is what will grow.
I will grieve what’s been lost and I will grieve what’s died, but I will grieve with joy, because what God is birthing from the aftermath of this pandemic is drenched in HIS GOODNESS and nothing, no NOTHING stands a chance against our God!
"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." - Isaiah 43:19 ESV
1. What are some things you’ve been doing to keep yourself rooted in Christ and His truth through this pandemic? And how has that changed your perspective? If you’ve had a hard time staying grounded in His truths, how might it change your perspective if you started today?
2. What blessings from God have you witnessed spring forth in the midst of the COVID-19 circumstances?
Heavenly Father, sovereign God. How mighty You are. Thank You for Your truth that overflows from Your Word. Help me to appreciate what You allow. Lord, be near the brokenhearted and hurting. Please use me to point others to You - the one who brings hope to the world. You are both our anchor and riverbank overflowing with deep water. My trust remains in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
