“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
- John 16:33
I don’t know about you, but sometimes everything just feels really heavy. There are times where no matter how hard you try, life just isn’t going your way. Maybe you didn’t get the job you’ve been praying for, or you’ve been going through a tough breakup. Or perhaps you’re similar to me and are feeling overwhelmed and hopeless by all the sin and evil in the world. Whatever it looks like for you, you are not alone in the struggle.
I am thankful that we have a God who understands our pain and sadness. We can see evidence of this in John 16:20 when Jesus is telling His disciples that He will be leaving, and they are understandably upset. It says, “I will tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.” When I read this verse, I am comforted in knowing that the pain we face on this earth is temporary. Even though there is so much darkness and pain in this world, we can experience joy because of Jesus. There is no question that we will all feel pain in this life, but we can trust in His promises of eternal life.
If I’m being honest, I sometimes find this hard to hear. I get impatient, and I want all the hurt to just go away right now. But as much as there is pain and sin, God has blessed us with things on this earth to feel joyful about. I am reminded of this every time I step out into nature, and I see the beautiful creation that He has given us. I also see this in my relationships with friends and family, as I see God’s love shine through them. When I feel discouraged I love reading over John 16:33, and I am reminded all over again of God’s peace. We can take heart and know that He is good and that He has overcome the world.
1. What is something that is giving you joy?
2. Are you currently experiencing any pain or sadness? Are you allowing yourself to be comforted by God during this time?
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your everlasting love. Thank You for sending Your Son to die on the cross for our sins. God, when I am feeling sadness or grief, please comfort me. Remind me that I can trust in Your promises. Father, help me to find joy in everyday life. Remind me that You are still present in the darkness of this world. Thank You for all You have done for me. Amen.
