Take Heart! I have Overcome the World

Elisabeth Lough

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.

- John 16:33

Our trials seem so giant and unbearable. A job loss. A loved one who has died. A cancer diagnosis. A nasty breakup or divorce. A miscarriage. Life throws many challenges at us in an attempt to break us. But God has conquered each and every trial we face through His death on the cross. He allows us to go through them for a reason, even if we never find out what that reason is.

Jesus experienced excruciating pain and suffering. Our trials fade in the shadow of the cross. As He hung on the cross, Jesus cried in agony, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Mark 15:34) Jesus knows what it’s like to suffer, enabling Him to emphasize with our pain more than we realize.

God gives us peace in the trials. His peace is perfect and passes all understanding. Philippians 4:6-7 emphasizes this truth: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Friend, pour out your heart to God. By that I mean, tell Him everything. Tell Him the good, the bad, and the ugly. Don’t be afraid to cry. Psalm 56:8 says, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” It’s okay to cry when you talk to God; He doesn’t mind. And as you tell Him everything, let His peace fill you and comfort you. Lay your cares at Jesus’ feet and leave them there.

When the trial seems to go on and on, don’t believe the lie Satan whispers to you that this trial will never end. Sometimes it certainly feels that way, but God’s Word says otherwise. Ecclesiastes 3:1 promises, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” This verse assures us that seasons of life come and go. Grief, pain, sorrow, despair, and trials in general will not last forever. They will pass. They may always be in the background of your life, but they do not have to consume you.

Dear friend, God understands your trial. Whatever you are going through, He knows, and He has compassion on you and loves you, no matter how you feel. Please turn to Him in your trial and trust Him every step of the way.

1. What trials can you give to God today?

2. Have you been taking everything to God on a day-to-day basis? Some battles cannot be won just once; they must be fought again and again. In the same way, we cannot take our trials to the Lord just once. We must do it again and again until they are no longer an issue.

Dear Lord, today I lift up my trial to You. You know what it is, but I want to give it to You and allow Your perfect peace to fill my life. I believe that there is a reason for what I am going through, even though I might not know what that reason is yet and may never know. Sometimes, Lord, I don’t understand, but I will trust You because I know You’re in control. I love You, Lord, and in Your Name I pray, amen.
