Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were
written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room
for the books that would be written.
- John 21:25 (NIV)
I’m obsessed with books.
I love scouring bookstores and libraries; I could sit in a used bookstore for hours.
I’m obsessed with them so much that I get extra joy from owning my own books. Borrowing is fun, but can it really be that fun when you have to give them back when you’re done? I want to own as many books as possible and I want to read them all!
I could even picture myself one day having a room with wall-to-wall bookshelves full of my favorites from childhood loves like Harry Potter to A Series of Unfortunate Events to informational community development books like Good to Great and Between the World and Me to spiritual help books like The Best Yes and Mere Christianity.
I don’t know that I will ever be able to read all the books I want to read - probably not even all the books I own. There are just too many to read, and not enough hours in the day! Anyone out there feel me on that one?
But, I know I am in good company with that desire. John finishes his gospel with this same sentiment!
“This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” - John 21:24-25 NIV
John knows that he is testifying to the truth about Jesus. He believes that Jesus’ life and ministry prove that He truly is the long-awaited Messiah! And John calls the readers of his gospel into belief as well.
He backs up this testimony by stating that all of the miracles, healings, teachings, and fulfillment of prophecies that we read about in Jesus’ life through the gospels are not even a drop in the bucket of all that He did and was going to do!
There are pages and pages dedicated to all that Jesus did during His time ministering on earth, but John expresses that if he had tried to record all of Jesus’ work, the writing would never stop! Every book in every used bookstore, Joseph-Beth, and home library in the world wouldn’t be enough to hold all of His works!
How incredible is that!
Not only did John testify to the fact that Jesus really was who He said He was, but also He solidified credibility for Jesus by stating that there were far more examples of His life and ministry that we don’t even know about!
Friends, we serve a Savior who can do and has done far more than we could ever ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). John testifies to this in Scripture, and we can testify to this today.
How incredible it is that as God was crafting the storyline of Scripture, He purposefully included the fact that though we had just read of signs and wonders more miraculous than we can often fathom, He can do so much more?
It speaks to His sovereignty. It speaks to His intentionality. It speaks to His love!
Oh how I wish I could read all the books in all the bookstores in all the earth! But it wouldn’t compare to reading innumerable amounts of books that all tell of the glory and majesty of God! It changes the way I look at Scripture - that this book is truly all I need!
1. How often do you spend time learning about the life of Jesus in Scripture?
2. What is a practical step you can take to spend time in Scripture this week?
Lord, thank You that You show Your heart for us through Your Word. Thank You that You give us examples of how You worked and moved in Your years ministering on earth. Thank You that You are so big and so grand that there’s even more that was never even recorded! Thank You that Your Word is truly all I need! I love You Lord, amen.
