But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
- John 14:26 NLT
We live in a world where everywhere you look something is being promised to us in the form of advertising and marketing. We can’t escape it. Promises of something better, faster, smaller, bigger, cheaper. Regardless of the “what,” the promise is usually that it will be better than what we already have. It will be an upgrade. And because we’re sinful people living in a sinful world, those promises will always fall short of fulfilling our deepest need. We are left feeling hopeless and in continual search of that next best thing. But, thankfully there is a source that can and does permanently fulfill and satisfy us in every way.
In the verse above (John 14:26) Jesus is promising the disciples that once He leaves this earth they won’t be left alone. Jesus promised this to them before His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. He’s telling them this so later, when everything He foretold them does happen, their faith will grow and they will understand that Jesus is who He says He is.
After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection the Bible says: “After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 1:3-5 (NIV)
When the disciples expressed their confusion to what Jesus was saying (Acts 1:6) this is how Jesus responded:“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.” - Acts1:8-9
The disciples were no longer confused. They watched Jesus ascend into Heaven and understood that their mission was to spread the Gospel truth to the ends of the earth, but that they had to wait for the Holy Spirit to come.
This is our mission too, but we don’t have to wait for the Holy Spirit to arrive because He’s already here. God wants you to receive His promise and gift of the Holy Spirit. We learn in Acts 2:38-39 that in order to receive the Holy Spirit we must repent, turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Girl, this is GOOD NEWS! The Holy Spirit is available to all who believe in Him. With the power of the Holy Spirit in us we have all we need to fulfill our mission of sharing the Gospel truth of Jesus with others.
But wait! That’s not all. Ephesians 1:13-14 (TLB) reads: "And because of what Christ did, all you others too, who heard the Good News about how to be saved, and trusted Christ, were marked as belonging to Christ by the Holy Spirit, who long ago had been promised to all of us Christians. His presence within us is God’s guarantee that he really will give us all that he promised; and the Spirit’s seal upon us means that God has already purchased us and that he guarantees to bring us to himself. This is just one more reason for us to praise our glorious God.”
The Holy Spirit in us is evidence that we are children of God and because of Jesus it secures us eternal life in Heaven. What God promises He ALWAYS fulfills, it’s only a matter of His perfect timing. Praise God.
Let’s be women that trust God completely and live confidently knowing we were created, held, and led by a sovereign, promise-keeping God and have the Holy Spirit living within us! Let’s be women that faithfully and bravely spread the good news of the Gospel of Jesus without hesitation until we take our final breath.
1. Have you received God’s gift of the Holy Spirit? If so, how have you seen the promise of the Holy Spirit move or be active in your life?
2. If not, in what ways can you live differently knowing that the promise and gift of the Holy Spirit has been fulfilled and is waiting for you to receive?
3. Who is someone that you can share the truth of the Gospel of Jesus with? Invite them to have a conversation over coffee, a walk, video chat, or Bible study. You’ve been equipped for this mission because the Holy Spirit lives in you.
Father God, Thank You for being a kind and generous God. Thank You for always keeping Your promises and for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Please help me to have a sense of urgency to spread Your Gospel truth with others and help me to bring You all the glory. Thank You for giving me the privilege of this mission and for the eternal life that awaits me in Heaven with You. In Your sovereign name I pray, Amen.
