The Hope of Blessing
Written by: Brianna Williamson

God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesn’t say “to his children,” as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says “to his child”—and that, of course, means Christ.
- Galatians 3:16
The Bible is a story of God’s blessing and favor. A blessing for humanity was a part of each covenant relationship we are told about in the Old Testament. With Abraham, the blessing of being the father of many nations deepened his relationship with God as well as giving him prosperity and success. But this success was not just for Abraham, it served a greater purpose; God’s purpose. Issac, one of Abraham’s sons, passed on the blessings of the family to Jacob and the blessing traveled down the line until it was finally fulfilled in Jesus. Galatians 3:16 says, “God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesn’t say ‘to his children,’ as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says ‘to his child’—and that, of course, means Christ.” This verse quotes Genesis 12:7 where the Lord makes His initial promise to Abraham.
Many people experienced the favor of God through “Abraham’s Blessing,” but it was not due to anything that they did. It was because of the plan and purpose that God had to bring Jesus into the world and the way that God desired to be in relationship with His people. So not only did God want to redeem the world, He wanted to use humans, all of whom were struggling in the worldly things themselves, to be a part of the redemption story.
Isn’t that amazing that we serve a God who not only saves us but cares enough about us to invite us to be a part of it? He could have left us in sin and separation but He chose to bless us with Jesus and continues to bless us daily as we seek Him. We can have hope in the blessing because the blessing is Jesus! It’s not any of the material things or the favor or the status it may bring, but it’s the relationship that we get to have with Jesus, our Savior. We continue to get to be a part of His story today as we believe in Him.
And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you (Galatians 3:29).
Reflection
1. What have been your thoughts around the word “blessing” in the past?
2. What are your current thoughts around the idea of favor and blessing in regards to our relationship with God?
3. In what ways can you humble yourself today and thank God for the blessing of Jesus?
Prayer Dear Lord,
I pray that I never allow myself to forget Your love and kindness. Help me to remember always how You invited Your creation into Your story and continue to invite us to be a part of what You are doing today. How special is it that we have the opportunity to partner with You. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen!
