The Lies of Motherhood: I Can't Do It All

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

- Isaiah 40:31

The world as we know it has been turned upside down by a virus. Working moms are now stay-at-home moms, trying to home-school whilst still trying to earn a living. Dining room tables have been converted to offices for mom and dad to share. Potty-training toddlers and angry teenagers need attention as you step in a puddle and realise someone let the puppy in.

You think about your friends’ social media posts: their new morning exercise routines, arts and crafts done by tiny hands, older kids nicely sitting behind their desks with their homework. You think about their gorgeous Pinterest homes as you trip over toys trying to get to your phone on time before your boss hangs up. And somewhere between all of that there’s a husband and marriage to take care of as well.

Mom, we weren’t meant to do it all.

We live in extraordinary times now. We have families, we have jobs, and we are fighting hard to keep both.

We are surrounded by so many lies, so many things that make us feel inadequate. As I was lying next to my little girl tonight, her hand was rubbing my cheek until she fell asleep, and the following words came to me:

I have a living, breathing miracle yet, I have doubt Against all odds she is lying next to me yet, I have doubt We laugh, we play, we learn, we pray yet, I have doubt We argue, we fight, we tickle, we cry yet, I have doubt Your big brown eyes and expressive features that speak about deeper knowledge and truths it scares me when I sit back and wonder Am I really what you need me to be? Am I strong enough, while gentle enough? Am I doing enough?

Am I enough?

God gave me a living, breathing miracle Yet, I have doubt

Mom, you weren’t meant to do it all.

Don’t become too busy. Do what is needed and do what is right for your family. Your Heavenly Father will take care of the rest.

Now you go rest too.

Reflection

1. Put down your phone, close your laptop, go play with your kids. How can you take some time this week to rest?

2. If you’re not a mom, how can you be encouraged today knowing you don’t have to do it all and you can rely on your Heavenly Father?

Prayer

Father God, we are so tired. Many nights we are too tired to even pray. We try to do too much, Lord. Grant us the wisdom Lord to learn to say “no” to things of lesser importance, because we don’t have to do it all. Renew our strength, so that we can soar like eagles.
