I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me,
I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.
- John 10:14-15
I have always loved the metaphor of Jesus being a shepherd.
When I envision that, I am filled with a sense of peace knowing that I am loved and cared for. With Him leading me, I know that I am safe and protected.
I love the description that Jesus uses to describe a shepherd found in John 10:3 which says, “The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” This is a great illustration of Him knowing us personally. We are not just a number to Him. Jesus calls us by name, and He is with us every step of the way.
When I read through John 10, I am inspired to want to know Jesus better. I know for myself, I can often take His love for granted. But the fact that He knows us so well and cares for us so deeply reminds me to lean into Him, and to trust Him with my life.
I also love that this passage reminds us of the ultimate price that Jesus paid for our sins. John 10:11 says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.” I am always amazed when I really think about what this means. As humans, we are sinful and we will make mistakes. But Jesus still loves us anyway, and the Bible says that “while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8), He died for us.
Following God does not mean that life will be easy, or that you will be shielded from all the pain and evil in this world. But we can be sure that Jesus is our good shepherd, and that He will lead us through the challenging times.
When you are feeling lost or anxious, I would encourage you to take a minute and picture Jesus as your shepherd. Visualize yourself with Him, He is calling your name and leading you towards Him. A passage I use to help me with this is Psalm 23:1-2 which says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.” When I read this, I am reminded of His constant presence.
With God in control, we can be sure we are cared for, and that we will never be alone.
1. What does it mean to follow and to trust Jesus in your day to day life?
2. What are some Bible verses that remind you that Jesus is your shepherd?
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You so much for Your love. Thank You for guiding me and for never forsaking me. When I am feeling lost or abandoned, remind me that You are my good shepherd. Remind that You are in control, and that You are keeping me safe. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins, that even though I fall short, You still welcome me into Your arms. Thank You for Your love, Amen.
