Tired of Being Tired

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

- Matthew 11:28

We are all tired of something. Tired of work, school, drama, or worrying. Tired of being tired. Sometimes this feeling of tiredness just weighs down on my soul and makes some days seem, well, exhausting.

In this season I’m especially tired of judgment. Everywhere I turn someone is judging others for wearing a mask, or for not wearing a mask, for standing up for one social cause or another, or for voting for a specific political candidate. It can be truly exhausting, and some days it seems like there is no end. I can’t control the judgment of the world, BUT one thing I can control is my own judgment. I often find myself worrying that I am not enough. That I should be prettier, smarter, more successful, and even a better Christian. It’s exhausting to constantly compare yourself to every friend, colleague, influencer, and human on this planet.

But, Jesus’s promises in Matthew 11: 28 bring me perspective during these times of exhausting judgment. “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He continues, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” Not only does Jesus call us to rely on Him for rest, but He also instructs us to hand over our fears and worries and He will carry their weight. Jesus carried His cross for us so that we can be ourselves, without fear of judgment.

When something has been weighing down on you for a long time it can be hard to simply let it go. I can’t instantly stop comparing myself to others and judging myself. But, I instead have made a conscious decision to turn these feelings and thoughts to Jesus. When I find myself thinking negative things about myself, I make sure to remind myself that Jesus loves me for who I am, and I talk to Him about it; just a simple, honest prayer helps to clear my mind and grant me peace. God reminds me who He is and who He made me to be. “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book” Psalm 139:16. How incredible is that?

No matter what it is you’re tired of, I encourage you to turn it over to Jesus in prayer. You might be amazed by how free you will feel. Jesus is waiting for you with open arms, encouraging you to come as you are.

Reflection

1. What are you tired of?

2. What would it look like for you to let go of these burdens and give them over to Jesus?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for making me the way I am, and loving me despite my flaws. Lord, You know the things weighing on my heart, please grant me peace and clarity while dealing with them. I know that with You by my side I can tackle any challenge in front of me. Thank You for walking beside me and accepting me as I am. I am so blessed to be Your daughter. Amen.
