When everything is ready, I will come and get you,
so that you will always be with me where I am.
- John 14:3
“Things are so bad that Jesus has to be coming back soon!” I heard someone say.
Inwardly, I bristled at the words. My life was full of strong friendships, successful college classes, and good health. Why would I want Him to return now—even if things in the world were a little crazy?
I felt guilty right after asking myself that question. I wasn’t just thinking about some random acquaintance I’d had when I was four years old. I was thinking about Jesus—my Savior, my God, and my friend. He had died for me, and yet I, as a Christian, wasn’t hoping to see Him come back any time soon.
Why am I thinking like this?
As I mulled it over, God started to reveal some problems in my heart. He showed me that I was looking at the picture from the wrong perspective, causing me to see a grossly distorted version of the pure, lovely truth.
Jesus’ return isn’t a punishment or a loss. It’s a hope. And that hope isn’t focused on how happy we are with our circumstances or how frustrated we are with the world. It is focused entirely on Jesus. Finding hope in His return means looking forward to spending eternity in the arms of the One who loves our souls. While we’re there in His arms, we can experience the ultimate healing from all the pains of life, and we can be filled with joy unimaginable in this world.
His return should never be viewed as the only end to bad times or as the destroyer of current happiness. It will be the fulfillment of all our hopes to see His magnificent face with our own eyes for the first time. The difficulties and imperfection of this life will pass away as we enter Heaven to be with Jesus forever.
“No longer will there be a curse upon anything,” Revelation 22:3-4a notes of Heaven, “for the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and His servants will worship Him. And they will see His face.” The Bible states that we will get to see His face all the time. No longer will we have to be physically separated from our God; He will be right there! What a future to hope for!
We can have that hope in this life because of Jesus’ return. In the hard times, we can find hope in remembering that Jesus will return and set things right. In the good times, we can find hope in realizing that our joy will be full and complete when we reach the arms of our Savior.
He has not forgotten us here in this broken world. He is currently preparing a home in Heaven for each one of us. And one day, He will return and take us home with Him forever.
So, for now, we wait and we hope.
1. How do you view Jesus’ return?
2. What can you do this week to better hope and prepare for His return?
Dear Jesus, thank You for Your love and care for me even when I forget to find my hope in You and in Your return. Help me to always keep my hope set on You, and may I never stray from Your loving arms. You are my eternal hope. In Your name I pray, amen.
