Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD,
that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
- Psalm 112:1 (KJV)
Ladies, what kind of man do you want to marry?
I’m not talking about his looks. I’m talking about his character. How do you want him to treat you? What do you want him to say to you or do for you? What kind of job do you hope he has? Is he good with children (because if you marry him and God blesses you with children, he will be your children’s father)?
And, most importantly...will he point you to Christ? Will he make God a priority in your relationship? Will he pray with you, spend time in God’s Word with you, and encourage you spiritually?
The Proverbs 31 woman is the Biblical example of a Godly woman: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” (Proverbs 31:10-12 KJV). In verse 30, it says of this virtuous woman: “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” This is a woman who passionately loves the Lord, and her love for Him is worthy of praise.
Now let’s meet the Psalm 112 man, shall we? He is not as commonly recognized as the Proverbs 31 woman; in fact, I may be the first person to think of applying Psalm 112 to biblical manhood. But allow me to introduce you to him! “Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments” (Psalm 112:1 KJV). That’s the first thing you should look for in a man. Does he love the Lord? And not just that. You want your man to put God first in his life and to love Him with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength.
The Psalm 112 man is “gracious,” “full of compassion,” and “righteous” (v. 4); he “sheweth good favour” and “lendeth” and “guide[s] his affairs with discretion” (v. 5). He “shall not be afraid of evil tidings” because “his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD” (v. 7). The chapter mentions a few other things about this Godly man, but these are the ones I want to show you about him.
Perhaps you are in a dating relationship. Or maybe you’re like me, and you’re waiting for God to bring the right man into your life. If you’re married, I hope you are married to a Psalm 112 man (and if you’re not, pray and ask the Lord to help him become a more Godly man). But to those of you who are dating or single, I ask you to evaluate what kind of man you want to marry.
If you are dating a man who does not live up to the standards of the Psalm 112 man, I urge you not to settle. It isn’t worth it to compromise on something so important, no matter how special he makes you feel or how much you love him. Wait for God’s best for you because I promise that it will be so much better than you can possibly imagine.
My fellow single gals, don’t give up hope. Don’t grab the first guy who looks at you because you long for attention from a guy. I understand the desire to be loved, but make sure it comes from a Godly Psalm 112 man. Please don’t settle for anything less because you’re lonely or because all of your friends have a guy. Ask God to bring a Psalm 112 man into your life, and wait patiently for that kind of man. Psalm 27:14 encourages us to wait on the Lord’s timing: “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” Use this season of waiting to thrive as a single lady and trust that the Lord knows exactly what He’s doing in your life.
Also, single ladies, pray for your future husband. Pray that he has the qualities of the Psalm 112 man and other characteristics you want him to have. God wants us to pray specifically, so pray specifically about the kind of man you want to marry and spend the rest of your life with.
While you wait for or are dating a Psalm 112 man, make sure you’re a Proverbs 31 woman. When a Psalm 112 man marries a Proverbs 31 woman, God can use their marriage in an incredible way.
1. Think about the qualities you want in a future husband. Do they match up to what Psalm 112 says about the Godly man?
2. How can you become a Proverbs 31 woman to complement the Psalm 112 man God wants to give you?
3. Are you willing to wait for a Psalm 112 man, no matter what?
Dear Lord, I thank You for inspiring the author of Psalm 112 to describe a truly Godly man. I pray that You would help us to be patient and wait for You to bring this man into our lives. I’m sure You want Your daughters to marry such a Godly man who will love them and point them to You. Help us not to become impatient, to settle unnecessarily, or to rush Your timing with terrible consequences. Keep our eyes focused on You, whether we are single, dating, engaged, or married. We love You, Lord, and in Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.
