That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the
radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them.
- Luke 2:8-9
Christmas is my favourite time of year. I love reflecting on the story of Jesus’ birth, and how God used so many different people to celebrate Him coming into the world. We often focus our attention to Mary and Joseph, but everyone involved had an important role to play, including the shepherds.
At the time, shepherding was not seen as a very glamorous job. These people were not very high up on the social ladder, but God didn’t see them that way. They were the first to hear about the coming of the Son of God. He trusted them with that responsibility and saw them as important to His Kingdom.
I don’t know about you, but there have been times where I have definitely felt like I don’t belong, or that I don’t matter to God. I see others doing incredible things to further His Kingdom, and I feel like I am not worthy. But that could not be further from the truth. As we can see with the shepherds, God has space for all of us, and we all have value to Him.
If you ever feel like you are unworthy of God’s love, remember that He sent His Son for all of us. We are all welcome, we are all loved, and we can all be used by Him. John 3:16 says, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” God sent His Son to the shepherds, and He did the same for us. And because of this, nothing we can do can separate us from His love.
This week I would encourage you to lean into that truth, and trust that God deeply cares about you. Through faith in Jesus, you are His cherished daughter, and you are important to His Kingdom!
Reflection
1. What are some Bible verses that remind you that God cares about you?
2. What are some gifts God has given you to serve His Kingdom?
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful story of Your Son’s birth. Thank You that we can always look back on it, and remember Your promises and Your goodness. When I am feeling like I don’t belong in the Kingdom of God, remind me that I am Your cherished daughter. Help me to see that I matter to You. Thank You so much for Your love. Amen.
