Are You Flourishing?

Let’s be real, we all want to flourish. We all want to live a thriving life. But what does it take to thrive? How do we know if we are truly thriving?
Well, who better to turn to than Harvard for the world’s answers? I think we can all agree that Harvard has a reputation for being an expert on a few things. Several years ago, Harvard social sciences developed a “measurement approach to human flourishing.” In this measuring one’s level of human flourishing they narrowed things down to 6 key categories: “happiness and life satisfaction, physical and mental health, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, and close social relationships, and financial and material stability."
For each domain (or category) they developed a series of questions for a person to answer in order to gauge their level of human flourishing. You can find our (aesthetically) adapted version of their survey on LOR U or head to Harvard's website for the official version.
Completing this survey is a fun way of gauging how we are flourishing by the world's standards. As you finish, let’s take a minute to be still and present with God. Let’s give our answers to these questions over to Him. If you journal, journal about it. If you’re more of a talker, talk with Him about it. You can start with something like, “God, wow thank you that I…” or “Man, God, that was rough. If this is the measurement scale, where is my hope?”
God will meet you wherever you are, no matter how many zeros or tens or middles of the road that you may have filled out. And we have some great news, in Christ you can truly flourish even if you answered a big fat “0” for each and every one of these! Join us in our next blog post to learn more about what the Bible says about flourishing.
