My God, My God, why have you forsaken me! Tucked away in Matthew 27 you will find these words spoken by Jesus–the living sacrifice. Believers for years have tried to discern the meaning behind the utterance, concerning themselves with the question, “Did God forsake His one and only Son?” And though the phrase does lend itself to this thought, there’s something else to consider as you ponder these selected words of Christ.
Jesus wasn’t just crying out in agony, He was declaring God’s Word. For this phrase wasn’t an original quote, it was the beginning of a song. A song the Pharisees in the crowd would have known well.
Psalm 22:1 starts, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” and then it goes on to describe the scene happening before the religious leaders’ eyes. Psalm 22 prophesied Jesus’ death and claims His Lordship over all the earth.
As Jesus lived His epic battle for all salvation, He pulled out His weapon (the sword of the Spirit) and cut into the heart of His adversaries with truth: God’s truth, the only truth capable of digging out corruption. Jesus speaks a song from God’s holy Word in the midst of agony, knowing God’s truth is by far the greatest weapon against acts of evil.
It is because of God’s Word that we know truth wins out and love conquers all (1 Corinthians 13). It’s in the Scriptures we see these very truths played out when Jesus rose from the grave defeating death and leaving us (His followers) an inheritance of victory. And with this inheritance comes a weapon. A weapon that, when used properly, defeats its attacker.
