Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose?
I believe at some point in our lives, we all ask ourselves these questions. We long to supply meaning, to gain insight and understanding to life. We search for the answers in five-step plans, achievements, titles, Google articles, and personality analyses. All of which seem to come up short.
Pastor A.W. Tozer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
Genesis 1 tells us we were made in the image of God. It also tells us that God created us. If we want to know who we were created to be, then we have to know our Creator. Only the artist can tell you what the artwork means. The answers that we so long to know are found in God. We are His image bearers. Our true identity lies with Him.
Learning who God is and who He made me to be changed everything, but getting there didn't happen overnight. Circumstances of my life had given me an inaccurate view of God's character which led to an inaccurate view of myself. I spent years uprooting lies and replacing them with God’s truth and in the midst of it all I found intimacy with God, an intimacy that led to my identity being rooted in Him rather than the lies I had spent years believing.
And now I want to spend my whole life telling everyone I can about God: who He is, what He did, and how knowing Him is the life change everyone is searching for. I’m passionate about making sure that no one settles for anything less than God’s best for them, anything less than who He says they are!
Life begins to find significance as we breathe in the truths of our Heavenly Father and breathe out the lies of the world. When we write His Word on our hearts (Proverbs 3:3), we begin to find ourselves. Our true selves. The identities of the world fall off and we are captivated by who God is and who He made us to be.
Colossians 3:10 says, “Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.”
If you want to know your true self—who you were created to be—it starts with knowing God. Having an accurate view of His character and believing He is who He says He is. And when you know who God is and who He made you to be, it leads to a life lived on purpose and for a holy purpose!
